Ramirez's Broken Rib

The Dodgers announced that shortstop Hanley Ramirez has a broken rib but will try to play anyway tonight in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series. With the Dodgers trailing 2-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals, the decision by Manager Don Mattingly reflects the desperate situation his team is in, especially since the Cardinals are starting their best pitcher, Adam Wainwright.

add Ramirez: According to reports, he will be wearing a protective jacket under his uniform, similar to the ones that quarterbacks wear in football to protect their rib cages. The big questions remain: Can Ramirez swing a bat at a 95 mph fast ball and can he be mobile enough to go into the hole at shortstop and field a ground ball, let alone throw it over to first base? Taking a pain killer only works so much.

last add Ramirez: It is a fact that it is easier for a football player to play with a fracture. The Rams' Jack Youngblood played defensive end with a broken leg in Super Bowl XIV against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and quarterback Gary Beban sustained a broken rib against USC in 1967. Beban was still able to finish the game after treatment.
