Weekend wrap
During Mike Scioscia's tenure as manager of the Angels, the club has rarely had the opportunity to be a spoiler in a pennant race. The team got the chance to make things uncomfortable for the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend and did so by winning two of three games in St. Petersburg.

The USC Trojans are 3-0 but their play in wins over Hawaii, Virginia and Minnesota remind longtime watchers of teams that were coached by Ted Tollner, Larry Smith and Paul Hackett, who all had some decent starting players dotting the roster but overall were just above-average.

******

add USC: The Trojans travel to Pullman, Wash., this Saturday for their Pacific 10 opener against the lowly Washington State Cougars. After that, the Trojans face tough conference opponents in Washington, Stanford, Oregon, California and Arizona.
Speaking of Stanford, what was with the Cardinal wearing Navy Blue-colored uniforms against Wake Forest Saturday night?

add Pacific 10 uniform changes: Stanford wasn't the only team that had a new wardrobe. Arizona was decked out in an all red ensemble (jersey and pants) and Oregon painted its usually green or white helmets a light musty gray. And the Washington Huskies were left red-faced after being thrashed by Nebraska, 56-21.

Looking ahead: When No. 1 Alabama plays at No. 10 Arkansas this Saturday, it will be the first time since 1979 that the Crimson Tide has traveled to Fayetteville, Ark.
